Mont Vernon, New Hampshire is a hilltop town overlooking Amherst and Milford. Mont Vernon was once mainly agricultural; though it did host several large summer hotels. Now it is basically a bedroom community without much commerce or industry.

The town has a large historical museum in the Town Hall, and the Historical Society is in the process of publishing a series of books about the town. The Lamson Farm, built by the first colonial settlers, is maintained by the town for preservation and general recreation. According to tradition, the name was supposed be Mount Vernon and there was an error in transcription. An effort was made in 1855 to change the official spelling, but it did not succeed.

The town is home to Purgatory Falls, which features a scenic gorge, with a deep flume and a 20-foot waterfall into a deep rocky bowl. It is accessible only on foot.

NEW HAMPSHIRE THE BEAUTIFUL

“Why did you move to New Hampshire?”

Most newcomers would answer that question with three simple words, “quality of life.” This is an area where young parents want to raise their kids and then stay once the nest is empty - where neighbor knows neighbor, strong community ties develop and friendships endure. There is an unmistakable feeling of COMING HOME to the beauty of a land that overwhelms you and makes you want to live here forever.

Tucked into a corner of the northeastern United States, New Hampshire is the most mountainous if the six contiguous states that comprise New England. Shaped like a right triangle, the “Granite State” shares a boundary with the Canadian province of Quebec to the north, the winding Connecticut River and the state of Vermont to the west, the state of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Massachusetts to the south.

Anywhere you choose to call home in New Hampshire is just a short day trip from the city, the mountains or the ocean. The Merrimack Valley and Seacoast regions, which make up most of the southern tier, are each about an hour from the many attractions of the greater Boston area. Less than a 2-hour drive to the north are the majestic mountains of the Presidential range and the extensive waterways that form the Lakes Region.

Whatever your lifestyle, New Hampshire the Beautiful has a region to suit it!

Climate: New Hampshire’s weather is as varied as its terrain, boasting the beauty of four very different seasons. We have snow in the winter, new life blooms in springtime, our summers are full of perfect beach weather, and we boast some of the nation’s most beautiful foliage in the fall.

Population: New Hampshire has a population of just over 1.3 million people. The state’s population has just about doubled since 1960.

Government: New Hampshire’s state capitol is Concord, situated along the Merrimack River in the south central region of the state. The state government has three branches; Executive, Legislative and Judicial, headed by a State Supreme Court.

Taxes: Many people are drawn to New Hampshire for the lack of a state income tax and the lack of a sales tax. There is a tax on unearned income over a certain amount every year, and there is a property tax.

Licenses and Fees: Information on how to obtain driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, hunting, fishing and gun permits, boating licenses, marriage licenses and more in the state of New Hampshire.

Liquor: New Hampshire obtains a great deal of revenue through sales in state-owned liquor stores. You must be 21 years of age to legally purchase or consume any alcoholic beverages.

Education: In New Hampshire, local school boards administrate school districts. These boards have authority to make all rules and regulations of the government, organization and grading in the district.
